This Week in NCHC Hockey: Applause for conference in getting through ’20-21 season safely, with exciting games to boot

Now that the Frozen Faceoff has ended, it seems fitting to look back on the NCHC season.

It’s likely that three teams from the conference may make the NCAA tournament, possibly four, but with so much up in the air with selection, it’s also possible only two teams, North Dakota and St. Cloud State, will be chosen.

NCHC pick: March 16

Tuesday, March 16 No. 1 North Dakota vs No. 2 St. Cloud State Candace: Both teams went through tough opponents and barely escaped. I think home ice is the difference. North Dakota 3-2 Matthew: Tough to go against UND at home here. Watch me get this one wrong, though. North Dakota 4-2

NCHC picks: March 15

Well, I went 4-0 in the first round, while Matthew was 2-2. It’ll be harder going forward, but we’ll give it our best! March 15 No. 1 North Dakota vs No. 5 Denver Candace: If Denver wasn’t so shorthanded, I’d be more likely to pick the upset. However, I like North Dakota at home. North … Read more

This Week in NCHC Hockey: Minnesota Duluth reboots, looks to capture second place in NCHC with finale in St. Cloud

Entering last Saturday’s game against then-No. 6 St. Cloud State, Minnesota Duluth was in a slump.

Admittedly, the slump was only three games, but for the team that has won the last two national championships and played in three straight national championship games, it was cause for concern that the Bulldogs had lost three straight.

While a win wasn’t necessarily going to be a surprise, it’s likely that few expected the Bulldogs to roll to a 5-1 triumph over St. Cloud.

NCHC picks: Feb. 26-28

Thanks to North Dakota, I went back to three up on Matthew in our picks race. Last week, I was a perfect 3-0, while Matthew was 2-1. On the year, I am 44-23-6, while Matthew is 41-26-6. I was literally 40 seconds from going up another game on Matthew in our picks race, but then Western Michigan rallied against St. Cloud to tie it and then win the game in OT, so he got a game back on me. I still have a lead though. Last week, I was 5-1 while Matthew … Read more

This Week in NCHC Hockey: St. Cloud State rested, looking to avenge previous losses this weekend against Western Michigan

When you play in a league as competitively brutal as the NCHC, a rest weekend during the season can be a godsend.

St. Cloud State was off last weekend, coming off a sweep of Miami that had restored some of their swagger, swagger that had been tarnished when the Huskies were swept in Western Michigan three weeks ago.

NCHC picks: Jan. 29-30

Last weekend, my only flaw was reversing the nights of the Denver and Omaha wins. Overall, I was 6-2, while Matthew was 5-3. On the year, I am 28-18-6, while Matthew is 25-21-6. There are some canceled games due to COVID-19 this weekend, but we still have two series on the docket. Friday-Saturday, Jan. 29-30 … Read more

The venue seats 11,634 fans, and it’s known widely among college hockey circles as one of the toughest places for a visiting team to play.

A year ago, North Dakota was atop college hockey and one of the favorites to succeed in the postseason tournament. The Fighting Hawks were readying to host an NCHC first-round series when the college hockey season was abruptly ended due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

This weekend will mark North Dakota’s first home series this season at Ralph Engelstad Arena.
